Over 35 new games will be on show at GaMaYo on 21st November with an expected 400 developers attending the event to try them out. So we are giving you a sneak preview of some of them in the run-up to the event. Make sure you are there to see it all at WX in Wakefield on 21st November. The first in a series of interviews we will be bringing to you over the coming weeks about the games that will be on show starts now. Kicking us off new studio Maximalist Ltd
Wyrd Waters
We spoke to the team – Yasmina, Peter and Corrin at Maximalist and they filled us in on what to expect:
What would be your description of Wyrd Waters?
Wyrd Waters is a mythological naval game that brings larger groups of friends together for mayhem at the end of the day. With elements of board-game strategy and viking mythos-inspired real-time combat, Wyrd Waters is a digital reimagining of tabletop nights with friends gathered around the battle map, plotting against each other.
How did development start? Were there any key inspirations or ideas that drove you?
After countless nights of asking ourselves, “What are we playing tonight?” and endlessly sifting through our Steam library, we grew tired of searching for a game that could bring all our friends together—not just two or three—but the whole crew. We craved something that didn’t sacrifice the rich, captivating worlds and stunning art styles that single-player games like Hades and Cult of the Lamb offer.
Given our history of releasing single-player games across various platforms, we decided to tackle multiplayer head-on. Wyrd Waters was born from this challenge—a hyper-casual, mythological multiplayer game where you can host up to 8 friends, so no one gets left out!
Tell us about the team behind Wyrd Waters?
You may have seen us at Gamayo, where we demoed Space Salvage, a VR space flight and refuse collection game with a dash of British dry humor. This time around, we’re presenting under our own studio, Maximalist, instead of Fruity Systems.
Our trio is comprised of Corrin, Pete, and Yasmina—an experienced team of developers who, thanks to our indie roots, know how to cover multiple bases. Together, we’re building a studio that focuses on putting people first while showcasing folklore from across the globe.
What kind of experiences do you hope to bring players?
We aim to bring groups of friends together. The usual 4-player cap in most affordable multiplayer games often leaves someone behind, but we want to change that!
Whether you’re a duo or an 8-person fleet, you’ll enjoy outwitting each other while navigating the treacherous waters of the North Sea.
In 10 words or less, highlight the appeal of Wyrd Waters?
Myth-inspired naval battles for 2-8 players, blending strategy and chaos!
Any links to access the game?
