An Elaborate History of Chess by Iteration Games
What would be your description of your game?
An Elaborate History of Chess is a crafting strategy game touring the history of Chess. In true Chess tradition build castles, explore dungeons, farm turnips and get checkmated by a tree. Find answers to Chess’s darkest questions, like why the horse piece moves in an L-shape.

How did development start? (Were there any key inspirations or ideas that drove you?)
Development started around two and a half years ago, after we’d been playing games like Stacklands, and wanted to apply some of that same farming and civilisation building gameplay to something that people would find intuitive and easy to pick up. There’s been a resurgence in popularity for chess over the last few years, so we thought we’d test out how a chess-based farming game would turn out, and we thought our initial tests were pretty fun, so we kept going with it!
Tell us about the team behind the game!
We are Iteration Games, a team of three from Manchester. Working on the game are Alex and Matthew, who both work at Manchester Metropolitan University, teaching on the Games Design and Computer Games Development programmes.

What kind of experiences do you hope to bring players?
We really hope that players make the game their own. There’s lots of room for exploration and how you setup your farms, your defences, your adventuring parties, is all up to you. There’s a fun mix of turn-based and real-time strategy, and we hope that gives players something they’ve not really seen before across the weird mix of genres we’ve got covered!
In 10 words or less, highlight the appeal of the game!
