Are you coming to GaMaYo #24? This year the renowned event is being held at Project House, Leeds, with 38 games being demoed live and 300+ developers, game industry publishers, investors and platforms in attendance.
This event is brought to you by Game Republic along with their Official Partners Barclays Games and Creative, Xsolla and Red Kite Games, with event sponsor Plus Accounting.
Today we are looking at ‘Spotlight’ which is confirmed to be at the event, from Scroll Lock Studios!
Spotlight by Scroll Lock Studios
What would be your description of your game?
“Spotlight” is an isometric, light-based puzzle game where the goal of the game is to maneuver the beam of light from the “Spotlight” to an eagerly awaiting orb! However, the orb can be very particular about the type of light it likes, so through various helpful tools, the player can modify this light and guide it around obstacles, all to appease the orb.
How did development start? (Were there any key inspirations or ideas that drove you?)
The key inspiration was a puzzle from a Wii game called Zack and Wiki that our co-director, Rory, played when he was younger. It had the same basic concept as Spotlight with reflecting light from a source to hit a specific point. The drive to make this game was due to the puzzle’s frustrating flaws, as a mixture of clunky means of changing mirrors’ rotation, mirror locations being based on RNG and various other contributors. Rory felt the concept had so much potential to be explored and expanded upon, and thought it would be an injustice not to try.
Tell us about the team behind the game!
The team at Scroll Lock Studios is made up of seven members who are all grinding to bring the vision of Spotlight to life:
- Rory is our Technical Designer and one of our co-directions, formerly a solo developer from Leeds, who specialises in 3D art and blueprint programming.
- Ben is our Lead Programmer and our other co-director, with a background working with C++ and a main focus on maintaining a DX12, 2D focused engine called the “BEngine”.
- Rebecca is our Game Designer and QA Lead, with an undergraduate degree in Game Design and a Masters in Virtual and Augmented Reality.
- Wim is our Technical Animator with four years of 3D animation experience under his belt.
- Alex is our 3D Artist who has various experiences in 3D animation roles but recently is sharpening his skill set in character rigging.
- Tom is our Environmental Artist who has previously worked for game studio Safe Space Labs in Leeds, designing environments and props for players to explore.
- Hermione is our Lead Marketer who has experience not only in Game Dev but primarily making social media, video and web content for Cherry Chu Magazine and being a Community Manager for Game Republic.
What kind of experiences do you hope to bring players?
We hope to bring a relaxing and satisfying experience, but also something you can also engage your brain with. The finished result will be very approachable for anyone with an interest in puzzles, but with a steady and well paced curve so that anyone can keep up with the escalating difficulty of the puzzles as the game goes on. An aim important to us is avoiding unnecessary frustration, making sure we deliver a satisfying feeling when playing the game and completing the puzzles.
In 10 words or less, highlight the appeal of the game!
Simple to pick up, but endlessly deep and diverse.
