GravRiders by Peachbread

What would be your description of your game?

GravRiders is a fast-paced 3D hoverboard racer where every surface is part of the race track. Hop between buildings and weave through obstacles, pulling off tricks to gain speed and score, with a breakneck movement system that will see you gain mastery over both your gravity-defying hoverboard and the environment itself. You’ll experience a sprawling sci-fi metropolis that extends far above the clouds and deep underground, competing on the leaderboards against your friends and AI racers to set the fastest times and clear unique challenges.

How did development start? (Were there any key inspirations or ideas that drove you?)

The game was conceived as a modern take on the Sonic Riders series, mixing it with the style and attitude of other 00s games like Jet Set Radio: Future as well as the technical movement and speedrunning potential of some of our favourite FPS titles. We also saw how other games have tackled dynamic gravity and thought we could improve on it, with a system that predicts the player’s movement and aligns their rotation accordingly for smooth gravity-switching transitions between any surfaces. GravRiders was first pitched as a game for a university group project, but we continued development after graduation and entered the Tranzfuser competition, recently exhibiting the game in Dundee as part of the final showcase.

Tell us about the team behind the game?

We’re peachbread – a small but versatile three-person team, with experience making quirky little games. As developers, our goal is to follow the ideas that excite us! We believe this is the best way to make any art and allows the passion to come through in our games no matter which genres or mechanics we explore.
GravRiders has so far been our most ambitious project yet, and we’ve been developing our skills a lot while starting to bring in more talent to help expand the game and make its music and visuals pop. We mixed a lot of the influences and genres that the team loves into one tasty, hoverboard racing soup, which we hope you’ll enjoy playing as much as we do!

What kind of experiences do you hope to bring players?

We want to make strong, memorable experiences. If we can make you think “Wow!” or “I haven’t seen this done that way before”, then we’ve done our jobs right. In GravRiders, we want players to find something new every single run through a level, whether it’s carving new routes through the city, optimizing every little movement, or finding ways to squeeze in another trick.

In 10 words or less, highlight the appeal of the game?

Speed, style, and true freedom of movement in anti-gravity.
