Today we are looking at ‘Neon Overflow’ by Gongylus Games!
Neon Overflow by Gongylus Games
What would be your description of your game?
Neon Overflow is a fast-paced hack’n’slash where you are Unit7, a combat droid fighting her way across the neon-drenched rooftops of SynthCity to reach her final confrontation with the Overlord. Every strike charges your Heat, and when it maxes out, you enter Neon Overflow, an overpowered state of glorious neon chaos. Now optionally in Anaglyph3D (glasses are provided).
How did development start? (Were there any key inspirations or ideas that drove you?)
This began as the final year university project for team-of-two, Natasha Handley and Tia Downes. Natasha is from the past and loves 80s retrofuturism which is what drove us to make this synthwave inspired hack’n’slash. We wanted to melt the player’s eyes with Tia’s style, and Natasha’s VFX. We wanted something so juicy, it would count as one of your five a day. Gameplay was largely inspired by other hack’n’slash games like Hades and Lone Ruin. It was originally planned to be a roguelike, though the team wanted the player to be able to experience the game as a whole in a short time, so the permadeath aspect was removed, and the levelling system replaced with a pip system that the player can use to customise their build after every level.

Tell us about the team behind the game?
Team Synthesis is a collaboration between Natasha Handley (aka Gongylus Games) who was the Unity developer, and Tia Downes who was the 3D artist and animator. Both are 2025 graduates of Game Design BSc at Leeds Beckett University.
What kind of experiences do you hope to bring players?
Neon Overflow will get your blood pumping. You will be transported to a dystopian future imagined by the 80s where you are swift, and you are powerful, and you can win!

In 10 words or less, highlight the appeal of the game?
Visually stunning hack’n’slash with novel use of Anaglyph 3D.
